Background of the Study

With the increasing use of digital technology in education, cybersecurity has become a critical concern in schools. Secondary schools in Minna, Niger State, are no exception, as the growing reliance on the internet for research, communication, and administrative purposes makes them vulnerable to cyber threats. Students and teachers, who often lack sufficient knowledge about cybersecurity practices, are at risk of cyberbullying, identity theft, and data breaches.

Enhancing cybersecurity awareness among students and teachers is crucial to ensure safe online behavior and the protection of personal and institutional data. Cybersecurity awareness programs that focus on educating users about risks, preventive measures, and best practices can significantly reduce the likelihood of cyber incidents. The integration of cybersecurity education into the curriculum, alongside workshops and training sessions, is essential. Additionally, the use of online platforms, such as Moodle or Google Classroom, can facilitate the delivery of educational materials and simulations to promote better understanding.

Statement of the Problem

In secondary schools in Minna, many students and teachers are not sufficiently aware of cybersecurity risks and best practices. This lack of awareness exposes them to cyber threats that can lead to data breaches, identity theft, and other serious consequences.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current level of cybersecurity awareness among students and teachers in secondary schools in Minna, Niger State.

  2. To design and implement a cybersecurity awareness program for students and teachers in the selected secondary schools.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the cybersecurity awareness program in improving knowledge and safe online behavior among students and teachers.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current level of cybersecurity awareness among secondary school students and teachers in Minna, Niger State?

  2. How effective is the cybersecurity awareness program in improving knowledge about cybersecurity risks and preventive measures?

  3. How do students and teachers perceive the importance of cybersecurity education in their daily activities?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The level of cybersecurity awareness among secondary school students and teachers in Minna is low.

  2. The cybersecurity awareness program will significantly improve students' and teachers' understanding of cybersecurity risks and safety measures.

  3. Students and teachers will report positive changes in their online behavior after participating in the cybersecurity awareness program.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant in promoting safe online practices and safeguarding personal data within secondary schools in Minna. By enhancing cybersecurity awareness, students and teachers will be better equipped to protect themselves from online threats, thereby contributing to a safer and more secure digital learning environment.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on secondary schools in Minna, Niger State, and assess the effectiveness of a cybersecurity awareness program among students and teachers. Limitations include the possibility of low participation rates in the awareness program and challenges in implementing the program across all schools.
